Attack of the River People by jmsnooks Attack of the River People by jmsnooks
From the murky depths of the Mississippi they emerge, features mercifully hidden by the shadow of the oncoming storm. They are called the "River People" because they live beneath the river and seldom come to the surface. Sometimes they come out during storms (like certain types of frogs and toads), sometimes they come up to sun themselves, but occasionally they visit the surface world to check on what the humans are doing. For the most part they are peaceful wanting only to be left alone, but when anyone threatens their freedom or safety they can become aggressive and wrathful. They are descended from the people of an old Confederate village which, near the end of the "Civil War" found a way to become amphibians capable of breathing in both air and water. The purpose was to avoid having to become a part of the union, and now they are no longer even a part of humanity. They have mottled brown and green skin, like the detritus one often finds on the bottom of rivers, and their bodies are also a bit deformed due to genetic errors that cropped up during the transformation process their ancestors underwent. Sometimes they can be seen coming out of the water near abandoned crumbling docks but they never stray far from the shore. It is rumored that the tattered remains of their village still exist beneath the river somewhere in within the range they inhabit.

This all comes from a dream I had. I was sort of in the mood for drawing dream imagery. Mostly this was done with markers but the outlines are in ink.

Yes Sir
Started Art School a year ago, since then..I open up a newer account:beer:
My style really hasn't change much over the yrs, still enjoy drawing people/musicians.

Very good man. It's good to see you again. Actually I was thinking that you got banned from DA before.

So how is art school? What are you planning on doing when you graduate? Maybe you will consider drawing BoA sometime.

Yea I can see the improvement.

Haven't drawn as much as I used to. I draw a little from time to time but I work so slow, and I'm also working on a novel now and looking for a better paying job. Plus I'm in another relationship so I don't have as much time as I used to.

haha I was never banned, but i grew tired of my previous account and stayed away from the internet!
After enrolling into school, my time is very limited with all the homework and final projects..having to do everything by computer now :P About two more years to go for my BA in Animation/Media Arts..thinking about just being a Graphic Designer.

So I draw portraits on the side, whenever I get a break from school.

Your previous account was all jacked up anyways. It's probably for the best that you deleted it.

Are you going to get an internship?

I personally don't find doing art on the computer to be very satisfying.

That's OK man, it's partly my fault for not being online very much. I have been working a lot but I could probably still get online and catch up. Right now what I'm doing is working on a story which I am turning into a novel. I would be glad to share it with you if you're interested.

You know sometimes I have some really interesting dreams. I think this one was inspired by all the float trips I used to go on as a kid.

That is definitely a new email. The last one I had for you was "stealth defcon" something or other. Anyways thanks man, I added you. Will send you something later.

I understand. School has to come first. Maybe what I will do is send you some of my maps and concept art for now.

Don't have skype. Right now the only thing I'm using is yahoo messenger because I don't have a computer of my own which connects to the internet anymore.

dude, i wish i could draw my dreams. alas, i seem to be somewhat lacking in that area and since they tend to be pretty strange in their own way and most of the time involve people that i actually know, i tend to avoid it.

I think for me dreams are either strange or mundane. I also very seldom dream about anyone I know, and usually when the dreams are not just some mundane thing then I am frequently not an active participant in them.

Right, they had some genetic errors crop up during the process. Of course if you think about the scale of the genetic changes they must have made then you could say they are lucky that the process turned out as well as it did. They are still fully functional and probably physically stronger than the average human, they're just ugly. But if everyone is ugly then no one cares about looks, or they have different/lower standards of beauty and are fine with it.

Exactly. It's like building the world's most largest clock, with the only flaw in the end being that the chimes aren't the ones you wanted.
Yeah. The taste in beauty will be different because of surroundings, culture and general fashion. Kind of like how in the past chubby women were the definition of beauty, instead of today's sleek and thin women. I'm just waiting for muscular women to become the new definition of sexy.

Well that is one way of putting it, although I would say it's more like building a clock which works just fine but ends up looking like a Salvador Dali painting.

Well chubby women were desirable in western cultures but not so much in other parts of the world like India, where it women with small waists were always preferred. ACtually the standards of beauty in India have been fairly constant for thousands of years. The thing about muscular women is that it requires a lot more work to get that way then it does to simply keep the fat off.

As for the river people, I think that with them they place more value on physical strength. Having a beauty standard is hard when everyone looks so different. I mean look at the weird shapes of their heads. Probably for the river people a woman is beautiful if she doesn't have more than one bald spot on her head.

Ah, an even better example.

Yeah, it requires more work, but it is oh-so worth it. For one, you don't have to worry about some prick hitting on her 'cause she would be able to take care of herself. For another, dem abs on her. :D

Just physical strength? What about speed and endurance?
Heh. Thinking up cultures is fun.

True to a point, unfortunately lots of women have a freeze reflex when it comes to situations of peril. To a certain extent the old movies are true when they show women standing still and screaming whenever the villain or monster approaches. So even when they can defend themselves they often don't because they freeze up. Still, your point is a correct one, it's best for women to be in good shape.

Well probably those as well. Mainly practical physical attributes that increase survivability. After all they spend most of their time in the river and under water. They don't have mirrors or makeup or any of the feminine "essentials." And I was thinking that if their population grows they might even spread out and get into other rivers as well, and maybe eventually even the Great Lakes (if they can handle the cold).

I can never remember my dreams unless they are the one where I work a whole shift (and then actually have to go to work) or the one where I try to get something and it isn't there.

I remember them when I wake up but then the memory fades unless 1) the dream was particularly remarkable and impressed me or 2) I choose to think on it and stew on it until it becomes a memory. But at any rate you will get to see some more of my dreams soon enough.
