Hari Seldon on Trantor

Description

Hari Seldon arrives on Trantor, based on "Prelude to Foundation" by Isaac Asimov and done with colored pencil, and reduced in quality by an inferior scanner. For those who are unfamiliar with Asimov, Trantor is a one planet city, sort of like Courescant from Star Wars, but in this case it's actually enclosed in an entire building structure so no one has to ever go outside. Those women in the background are laughing AT him not checking him out or flirting. They all find his foriegn clothing distasteful and humorous. In spite of that, and in spite of Isaac Asimov's disbelief in large moons, I still managed to find a way to include a large planet in the background. Eventually the planet gets sacked (like Rome) and the descendants of all these proud foppish people degenerate into a foul redneck type race. I drew Hari Seldon because he is my favorite character out of all the Asimov stories I have read.

Unlike some of my other favorite authors, Asimov does not do much when it comes to generating vivid mental pictures. Mainly in regards to setting but also costume design and, depending on which books are read, character design. In Prelude he actually takes a little time to describe settings, costumes and characters. He said the Imperial sector had rococco style architecture. The men wore colorful clothing, the women wore white, and everyone wore hats. Basically the men are like Peacocks there. So all in all this was sort of my impression although I admit that adding the large planet was a bit of personal flare.
