Khaless vs. the Tyrant Molar

Description

Khaless the Unforgettable (right) challenges the tyrant Molar (left). Pieced together from hints dropped in STTNG. One of the things Khaless was known for was defeating the Tyrant Molar. Worf participated in a street play/opera where Klingon men would come up to this old guy who was playing Molar, and they would all act out defeat and each defeated warrior would sing to the audience asking if anyone could defeat the Tyrant Molar. So I'm thinking, "Hmmmm.... what would it take for the Klingons to consider someone a tyrant?" That would have to be someone pretty hardcore... I have to draw this guy."

Since it was ancient Klingon society I had pretty much a blank check with costumes and architecture. I wanted the architecture to look rugged and menacing, yet also somewhat opulent, with faint echos of STTNG period style. Khaless of course had to wear the battle sash evident in STTOS and STTNG, since by then Klingon society is founded on Khaless it was logical to conclude that the sash had something to do with him as well. So basically Khaless is a wild man, wearing various animals fashioned into what will later become a basic pattern. For Molar and the women I just wanted them to look menacing and somewhat cool. Since their culture was obliterated by the culture perpetuated by Khaless I did not have to draw from any actual Klingon designs used in the series. I wanted them to look like tyrannical fascists, and in fact that is why they have the pink Highlights. They are not wearing pink because they're sissies, they wear pink for the same reason communists and nazis on earth wear red. According to ST6 Klingons have pink blood, hence the pink. And yes, that is a Klingon skull fragment Molar is using for a shoulder pad.

I wish you all could see the original. Aside from washing out the colors, my scanner also does not do well with dark tones, it tends to add pixilation and other weirdness thereby destroying the original color and detail. So a new scanner is a must as soon as I get done with school.

On another note, I have been thinking about doing a short comic on the adventures of Khaless based on hints from STTNG. It might be time consuming and I might lack the commitment but on the upside it would give me a chance to design some wicked cool costumes and draw some more women. Part of whether I decide to do that or not will depend on the success of this picture. Although I gaurantee that if I do that it won't be colored pencil. Too time consuming for a comic.
