Sir Wheeliam vs. The Troll by jmsnooks Sir Wheeliam vs. The Troll by jmsnooks
Sir Wheeliam is just riding along and then his horse steps on the sacred emeralds belonging to a misnanthropic troll. Wow, misanthropic troll, I've encountered lots of them on the internet. Anyways, this is an illustration I did for a friend who is working on a story for kids. I don't know how much spoiler information I'm allowed to give away so I won't say anymore, but whenever he publishes I'll probably post a link here. At any rate, this was kind of hard for me because it's been most of my life time since I have last attempted to draw a horse. I should probably practice drawing major types of critters just to hone my skill. The beauty of alien and fantasy creatures is that if you screw up no one can tell, but when doing real life animals you have to be more accurate.

Ihave noticed, that in every picture there is one dominating color each time, whether blue, red or yellow. I like the effect of that. and hereit makes the two characters stand out even more!

Really? If so then that is not intentional most of the time. In the case of this drawing it actually was though.

This is great. Your style is so unique and your backgrounds are so ethereal. Really good overall.

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'm going to be doing some more Burroughs illustrations pretty soon, and those should be pretty fun.

Thanks, glad to hear it worked out. So you watched the tutorials? Did you find them to be helpful in any way? I mean, I know the resolution left a lot to be desired.

Yea. To me, they did help colour-wise. Even though I don't really use pencils anymore.

Awesome, glad I could help.

Why aren't you using colored pencils anymore?

"Wheeliam"? Well, he looks awesome, though the name does not. And of course, so does the scenery, as always.

I don't know much about horses, and certainly can't draw them to save my life, but I think the main problem is just the lack of foreshortening on the far hind leg, since it looks like the horse is crossing its legs. Other than that it looks just fine, though perhaps a bit more slender than most.

That troll thing, though, seriously made me laugh. It looks like this big green retard standing up and going "Boo!" XD

Haha! Well I didn't come up with the name, but I'll send you a note explaining it.

You know it's a real shame my brothers dog is dead, he was a lot like a horse himself and I could have benefited greatly from studying him.

I can see that. Or he might be going "OOGA BOOGA!!"

The troll looks kind of silly and the horse is acting all: ''Pfft, whatever man. I don't care.''

It's because the horse is a stud. Get it? Yea... I've been watching the annoying orange a bit too much.

Yeah, when you say that I conjure up other thoughts. I blame a friend from school.
You watched it too? I stopped after the cheese episode. MAN, I hate that thing. I'd rather watch Full House.

Speaking of which, I had an agreement with a friend, this summer I'll come over to his house and we'll buy 100 bucks worth of junk food and drinks and watch an entire season of Oprah. After that, TWO SEASONS of Full House.

Thanks. You know part of the reason the colors look so much better is because I got a new scanner. I'm going to go back and rescan my old stuff and you will probably notice a difference with that as well. It still doesn't look as good as the original but it's scanning way better now than it has in the past.

I actually got another HP, and it's a combination printer and scanner. It can also print photos. It's an "HP Photosmart Premium."

honestly i don't think there's anything really "wrong" with your depiction of the horse (and in a way, could prove to be something that sets your style apart from others) the overall dimensions of the horse remind me of how i've seen them depicted in older pieces of art, both victorian (as in pictures of fox hunts, etc.) and in medival artwork.

my one real snag here is that the image lacks movement for what you're trying to convey here, without your explanation of the image, one could come to the conclusion that the troll is in fact some sort of ominous statue or something. i don't really know how to tweak it to give it that sense of motion, but i think that's the one thing this image is missing

Well I think the biggest problem is that the back legs seem to be longer than the front legs.

That's actually an area I'm trying to work on. I'm getting ready to launch into some comic series so that should give me lost of practice and experimentation.
