My take on Yavanna Kementari from the Silmarillion (Tolkien). I'm not a really huge fan of the Valar per se because, as cool and interesting as they are, I thought it was really lame how they walled themselves in and left the rest of the earth to rot under Melkor, when there was one of him and like 10 of them. At any rate, they are interesting so I enjoy drawing them. This is sort of a spin off of my favorite authors project: [link]

At any rate, I was just going to do a handful of the Valar which would include Yavanna, but since she is my favorite of the female Valar I decided to give her a solo pic. So here she is standing between the 2 trees. Silpion is waxing and Laurelin is waning. Drops are falling from Silpion and landing on Yavanna and the ground around her. Yavanna is responsible for the creation of the two trees, as well as all the plants and animals in middle earth. She is described as wearing green. I took it a step further and gave her green eyes, green lips, green nails, and green highlights in her hair. I wanted to make her look like an 'earth mother' type figure because that's essentially what she is. I think all in all the look suits her pretty well, and she will certainly appear again in my picture that features more of the Valar.

I like it.

If you're doing the Valar, don't forget to do Mandos and Nienna( my favorites) :)

Thanks. I definitely won't forget Morgoth, and I already have some pretty good ideas for Mandos and Nienna, assuming that Nienna is Mandos' wife. She is his wife right?

The glowing tree...so bright...O_O Though I do like the glowing affect. Laurelin's leaves are very pretty. That must have taken a long time. I like the shading in the green, as usual. Green always comes out nice. We the trees really this close? I seem to remember them being farther apart...

You did a particularly good job on her face.

Nope. Nienna the Weeper is his sister
Vaire the Weaver is Mandos wife

I partly remember her but not too well. I'm going to have to go over it again. Frell, I'm not going to be able to fit them all on one page.

Thanks muchly. Yea Silpion is glowing and Laurelin is dimming, but even fully dimmed they still glow a little. Probably Silpion would be so bright up close that the whole area would look white, including Yavanna, but I didn't think it through all the way perhaps. To answer your question, I don't know how close the trees were. It is said they grew up on a green hill called Kor or Kortirion, but I actually placed Laurelin back a ways, and you also have to remember that you are not seeing all of Silpion, and Yavanna is huge. The humans and elves probably only come up to her knees at best.

Thanks. Yes I used darker tones than what is usual for me on her. Since she's an earth mother type being I figured it wouldnt be appropriate to make her pasty white. In doing the valar I am trying to make them reflect their particular elements and leanings. I was pretty pleased with how her face and hair came out, but then I messed up on the dress. I had 3 green tones picked out and then a white for blending, but my darkest green rolled under the keyboard or something, so I ended up using a black for my lowlights, and it made things a bit more rigid than I would have preferred. Most unfortunate but I'll be more careful next time. Sometimes I get ahead of myself and the results are disasterous.
